How to install an electrical outlet with hidden wiring?

In order to bring the wires out, you need to use an electric drill and make a hole in the wall. Before starting work, you need to check whether the wiring is de-energized or not using an indicator. Before making a hole, you need to make preliminary markings on the wall and carefully cut out a recess for the socket box. When installing a socket box in a concrete wall, no additional reinforcement is required; just install a plastic dowel and attach the box with a self-tapping screw, screwing it in until it stops. To install a socket box in drywall, it is necessary to use appropriate boxes.

After installing the box, you need to connect the wires. First, you need to carefully remove the insulating material approximately 5-7 mm from the end of the wires and begin connecting them. Then you need to secure the contacts in the housing using 5 screws: 2 - for spreading the legs on the side, 1 - for grounding in the center, 1 - for the phase on the right and 1 - for the zero on the left. Depending on the type of connection, the wires can be connected using screw terminals with a terminal block or clamps with spring-loaded plates. The second type of connection is typical for imported sockets.

Then you need to insert the box into the socket box, using spacer screws, screwing them in one on each side of the socket. Carefully position the housing in the center so that the socket is level after fixing. Spread the tabs with the side screws to secure the box. It is better to give preference to designs with serrated legs. They better fix the structure in the wall and do not become loose during operation.

The final stage is the installation of the decorative casing. Using the central screw, you need to screw the housing all the way to hide it in the wall. Sockets with open wiring are the same electrical sockets as the hidden type, only the connection wires are not hidden in the wall, but, on the contrary, are placed outside.   • attach a decorative part;
  • check the serviceability of the socket.

When installing the socket in wooden walls, it is necessary to use paronite, which is placed between the back cover and the wall to prevent ignition. Repairing sockets in an apartment with your own hands

4. Installation of socket boxes

I will describe this stage in particular detail because not only the reliability, durability and ease of installation of the outlet, but also your safety depends on the quality of installation of the socket box in a concrete wall.

In order to reliably fix the socket box in a concrete wall, it is necessary to perform a series of actions sequentially. First of all the holes must be cleared of dust and primed using a specialized primer. This guarantees the reliability and durability of the installation of the socket box.


Next, after the primer has dried, dilute a plaster or putty mixture on a gypsum base and apply it inside the holes in the concrete, as shown in the image below. You can also use simple alabaster, the main thing is to work quickly, since pure gypsum has a short setting time. In cases where a small number of socket boxes are installed, this is even an advantage.


Then, “press” the socket boxes with the wires already inserted into them into the solution. It is important to install them strictly horizontally; for this it is convenient to focus on the marks of the horizontal axis that we applied when marking. Also make sure that the installation boxes do not protrude and are installed flush with the wall. It should look something like the image below. At the same time, it is more convenient to remove the gypsum mixture that has got inside the socket boxes after it has hardened and at this stage it is better not to touch it.

5. Wall decoration

When the mixture “sets” and the socket boxes are securely fixed. You can move on to finishing work. If you immediately cover the grooves, holes, etc. with plaster mortar. around the installation boxes, you can knock down their previously established exact position, so I advise you to first wait until the socket boxes are fixed.

6. Installation of sockets

When all finishing work is completed, you can proceed to the direct installation of the built-in socket mechanisms.

Ideally, each outlet is connected to its own distribution box. But it is also possible to power the new outlet from an adjacent one. In this case, the connection is made on the contacts of the previous socket, and not by twisting the conductors.

Since modern household appliances have more power, the thickness of the new wiring must correspond to the maximum load on a given point of power consumption. If you plan to connect several consumers to the outlet, then the wire is selected according to the sum of their powers.

New wiring is usually done with copper wire.

But, if the old wiring is aluminum and it is not possible to install a terminal connection, then you will have to use aluminum wires.

Due to electrochemical corrosion of the metal, twisting copper and aluminum wires is strictly prohibited. Moreover, such connections cannot be tightly walled into the wall. It is permissible to wall up soldered copper wires, provided that the connection point is reliably insulated.

Installation of sockets in a concrete wall

Ideally even grooves are cut using a grinder. But this tool creates an unusually large amount of dust, so it is used only in unoccupied areas. In everyday life, a hammer drill is used for these purposes, but the best solution is a wall chaser with a connected construction vacuum cleaner.

Along the trajectory of the future wiring, holes are first densely drilled, and then, using a chisel, the jumpers are hollowed out. The neatness of the groove, of course, cannot be compared with cutting with a wall chaser, but the dustiness of the room compared to a wall chaser is several orders of magnitude less.

The hole for the socket is drilled with an electric drill using a special attachment - a “crown”. The depth of the hole should correspond to the height of the outlet box. Ideally, the diameter of the box and the diameter of the nozzle are equal. Otherwise, the resulting hole must first be filled with construction plaster diluted with water (not putty - it is fragile!) or even cement mortar, and the box itself must be pressed into it so that there are no voids left around it.

Please note that the attachment must be specifically for concrete and have carbide cutters on the cutting surface.

Before installing the box, you need to make a hole in it, insert the ends of the wiring into it and put it in place in this form. The socket can be installed only after the solution has completely hardened.

Features of installing a socket in a brick wall

Brickwork has its own characteristics. Often in older houses the thickness of the plaster allows wiring to be laid directly into it. But you need to tap the plaster very carefully, since vibration can cause it to peel off from the brick base. Therefore, the procedure is performed with a grinder with a dust collection attachment.

If the wall in a private house is made of brickwork, then too large pieces will break off from the brick from the blows of the hammer drill. Therefore, only a grinder or wall chaser can be used for gating.

To drill a place for the box, the same crown is used as for concrete. As a last resort, if the brick is not very dense, you can drill many holes along the contour of the box and then carefully hollow out the middle part. The depth of the hole for installing the socket should be selected so that at least 2/3 of the height of the box is located in the thickness of the wall, and not in the plaster. How to install a socket in a plasterboard partition

The structural features of plasterboard partitions require a special approach. In this case, the wiring is laid at the stage of erecting the partition - before sewing the frame with plasterboard sheets. During the installation of drywall, a hole for the outlet box is selected at the installation site using a special cutter, and the ends of the wiring are immediately passed into it. If you drill two holes side by side, you will get double sockets.

For drywall, special, thicker and more rigid boxes are used, which have special clamping tabs that secure the box to the gypsum panel. The same technology is used to place the outlet on any panel surface, including plastic paneling, plywood and chipboard.

The wiring is pulled under the panels in the thickness of the partition. At the intersection of the metal frame profiles, the wire is passed through a mounting corrugation or a suitable tube.

If foam plastic or other low-melting combustible material is used as a soundproofing material for the partition, the thickness of the wiring cross-section should be increased by one and a half times. This will eliminate heating of the conductors at maximum current in the outlet.

Surface-mounted sockets and features of their installation

If you need a socket, but there is no way to recess it into the wall, use overhead structures. The overhead socket is installed on any solid, level base. Surface-mounted sockets are the only possible option for creating a connection point for built-in appliances.

As a rule, in these cases, the wiring is also not recessed into the walls, but runs along electrical boxes (cable ducts) or is laid under the baseboard. Overhead sockets are very convenient to install, repair and replace. Their only drawback is that they protrude strongly and can easily be knocked down by careless actions.

Rules and wiring diagrams

Please note that all wiring connection work is carried out in a de-energized state! You should first mark the phase and neutral conductors in each box.

Since current standards do not regulate the relative position of the neutral and phase conductors, they can be connected in any order. However, if a box is used to install several sockets, then the phase should be connected to the same side of each of them, and the neutral wire to the other. It is usually customary to wire all sockets in a room uniformly. But different connections are not considered an error.

The grooves for laying the wire are made either parallel to the ceiling or run along the floor. It is best to cover the wire running in the groove with pearlfix. Perlfix fully hardens in 10 - 15 minutes, after which it is as strong as a stone.

Installing socket boxes in a concrete wall

Socket boxes should be made exclusively for hidden installation of house wiring. The location of the electrical outlets is marked on the wall; to do this, you can outline the box with a pencil.

A special concrete crown is used to cut the hole where it was marked. When the contour is drilled using a hammer and chisel, the inside of the recess is knocked out. The wall in the recess is leveled so that the socket box stands exactly against the wall. If you don’t have a crown, you can gouge out the hole with a pike with the blow turned on, or manually with a hammer and chisel.

Most houses use round socket boxes for internal installation, although sometimes they are also of square shape. In this case, drilling with a crown will not work. You can make cuts with a grinder or hollow out them with a hammer drill. The depth of the hole should be such that the socket box extends 1 cm beyond the edges of the wall. When the hole is ready, it’s time to install the groove.

The installation of the socket box differs depending on their type. There are both single and joined on the sides. To do this, you need to know how to make a groove; it must fit so that the cable can fit inside the recess without any problems.

To attach the socket box to the wall, plaster, alabaster or pearlfix is ​​required. Perlfix would be better as it dries faster. Sometimes we use gypsum glue. The mixture should be thick, so it will set faster. During fastening, using a spatula, everything is wrapped with solution from the inside, after which you need to put a socket box there. After this, the gap between it and the wall is covered, while holding the socket box with your hand. When the mixture has completely dried, you can remove the excess and continue installation.

If sockets are installed without grounding, there will be only 2 holes on them, if with grounding - 3. According to the rules, contact connections should be located at the bottom. The excess length of the wire is laid on the bottom, after which the wires are connected to the outlet.

Installation of socket boxes in a plasterboard wall.

Installing a socket box in a plasterboard wall follows the same principle, only everything is much simpler. A socket box for plasterboard walls differs from a concrete one in that it has special clamps that allow it to be fixed to a sheet of plasterboard.

To cut the holes, you can use drywall bits, just like a utility knife. If the distance between the plasterboard and concrete is small for installing a socket box, you will have to make a small recess in the wall itself.

Installation of sockets

It is important to know how to connect the outlet correctly. Before installation, you need to remove 10 mm of insulation from the edges of the wire. Make sure that the machine is turned off during work.

There are two options for correctly connecting the outlet:

  • Hidden installation of electrical wiring;
  • Open installation of electrical wiring.

For any method of installing sockets of any type, you should know how each wire is designated:

  • L – phase;
  • N – zero;
  • PE – grounding.

It is also important to know that the wires are designated:

  • Red wire – phase;
  • Blue wire – zero;
  • Yellow (can be green or another color) – grounding.

Each wire must be connected to its own socket, that is, red to phase, blue to zero, and ground to ground.

Open option

The open version assumes that the sockets are installed on an external wall without drilling grooves and holes for socket boxes. The wire will also run outside along the wall. Installation of socket boxes is not required in this case.

Holes are drilled in the wall for mounting it. To do this correctly, you need to disassemble it and attach the back cover to the wall, after which, having previously leveled it, mark the points for fastening with a pencil. The back wall can be immediately fixed to the wall using quick installation or screws, the main thing is that they have dowels. Wires are mounted onto the block by inserting the edge of the wire and tightening the screw on the block. Accordingly, you need to connect the wires so that each wire is connected to its own block. Phase to phase, etc. After everything is ready, you can assemble the structure by covering the base with a lid, then fasten it with screws and the installation of the socket is completed.

Flaws:

  1. Unaesthetic appearance for residential premises;
  2. At the places of the sockets there will be cable channels, which will be mounted on the walls and will take up space;
  3. Protrude 5–8 cm from the wall.

Hidden option

The most suitable installation method for residential premises. This method requires grooves and socket boxes ready for installation.

To begin, take an electrical outlet and unscrew the decorative cover from it so that you only have the plug in your hands. Wires exposed by 1 cm are attached to the core by tightening the screws. Each wire must go into its own socket. Phase to phase, zero to zero. After this, you need to insert the socket into the socket box, level it and tighten it with screws. After this, the decorative panel is screwed on.

There are two options for attaching the block to the socket box.

  1. Using special paws. There are screws on the block and screws on different edges. When the block is inside, these screws are tightened and tighten the legs, which push the block inside and firmly fix it.
  2. Using screws. There are recesses on the edge of the socket box for screwing in screws. When the block is inserted into the socket box, the screws simply screw it to the box.

Installing a double socket

It is very important to know how to connect a double socket. There are two types of double hidden sockets:

  1. There are two sockets in one block
    In this option, installing a double socket, there is only one socket and, accordingly, one core. Fastening to connect a double socket occurs in exactly the same way as for a single socket.
  2. Two connected sockets
    An option such as a hidden double socket is very suitable for rooms. In this option, the installation of a double socket is carried out by installing two socket boxes into the wall. There are special double socket boxes for such tasks. The connection of a block of indoor sockets usually takes place in a series circuit. That is, the first one powers the next one. This option saves the amount of wire, because two sockets can be connected in series. The issue of connecting a triple socket is also resolved.

Socket block

To install the socket block, you need to make a socket box for each socket. There are socket boxes that can be connected to each other. For more convenient installation, you can install a block of combined boxes at once. When three or more outlets need to be connected, one cable may not ensure their safety under load. To do this, you need to run two cables at once or make a parallel connection. If the load for the triple socket is expected to be small, then a series connection will suffice.

Installing a grounded outlet

Everyone should know how to properly install a grounded outlet, especially since such installation is no different from installation for a regular outlet. The difference is that there are special antennae and instead of two there are three places for connecting wires. That is, earth is added to phase and zero. If there is a ground in the block, but there is none on the wire, it’s okay, it won’t affect the performance in any way.

Installation of Internet and TV sockets

The principle of how to make a TV or Internet outlet is exactly the same as with a hidden one. Only the network or television cable is inserted into a special connector. The cable is exposed so that the core is visible and inserted into place on the block. Connects to the screen to a power outlet using a special clamp.
