Roses in wax. We buy roses. When to spray plants against pests

Many people are accustomed to purchased seedlings with bare roots and long stems. And the cardboard tubes that have recently appeared on sale, in which shortened specimens are packed, are alarming. There is an opinion that it is precisely because of the heavily pruned roots and shoots that these seedlings have little chance of taking root. In fact, the flower dies due to improper unpacking and planting. How to plant plants bought in a box, what you should take into account, what kind of care the crop needs - we will talk about all this later in the article.

Criterias of choice

The usual thorough inspection of the stems and root system, which is the key to a successful purchase of any seedling, does not work in this case. In the box you will find greatly shortened shoots and roots, which are wrapped in black polyethylene.

It is almost impossible to discern the condition of the roots in a store or garden center. After all, unpacking planting material is not allowed. And incorrectly removing the seedling from the tube can only harm it.

At the end of all manipulations, many suggest dipping the rhizome of the bush into a clay mash based on a solution.
In the case when it was temporarily planted in a pot from a box, it went through all the necessary preparatory procedures much earlier, so now it only needs plenty of water. Some gardeners recommend adding growth stimulant solutions to the liquid.

Did you know? Roman soldiers worshiped the buds and for a long time used them for wreaths, which were intended only for the victorious. These attributes were considered symbols of courage and bravery. Every ordinary soldier dreamed of replacing his metal helmet with a pink wreath.

Planting a crop

If roses grow next to your purchase, step back half a meter from their trunks. In the case of miniature varieties, this distance can be reduced to 30 cm.

It is tedious to lay out the bottom of the hole in a layer. Expanded clay, brick chips or ordinary crushed stone are suitable for this. This procedure has a special place on heavy substrates.

Then add the prepared soil mixture of peat, river sand, turf soil and humus. It is also advisable to add two tablespoons of either to the substrate. After the manipulations have been completed, the seedling can be lowered into the hole. Don't forget to spread its roots well and... Then the rose is covered with earth. Depending on the type of crop, the degree of immersion of the root collar of the seedling is determined.

If we are talking about miniature and bushes, the place where their trunk transitions to the root is buried 3 cm. For other park specimens, including, the sprouts are deepened by 5-7 cm.

Important! On sunny days, young seedlings need to be shaded in the first days after planting. This will help them adapt faster and not waste their energy fighting for survival.

If we are talking about a potted specimen, planting is carried out by the usual transfer of an earthen tuber. At the same time, it is impossible to clean the roots from the substrate, and the branches from paraffin. The coating substance protects the plant from drying out and promotes rapid bud development.

At the final stage of planting, the crop needs to be watered again and the tree trunk circle. The following are recommended as humus: tree bark, humus, any, except.
Then some attention needs to be paid to the stems. Experienced rose growers advise cutting them sharp at a level of 20 cm, making sure that each sprout has 2-3 buds.

Actively offer seedlings of various ornamental crops, including roses, stores start in mid-February. Buyers, fueled by spring fever, stock up on them in advance, because they know that by the planting season all the new products will be dismantled, and the quality of the remaining planting material will not be the best.

Imported rose seedlings usually arrive in wax(paraffin). Whether this is good for the seedling is a big question. This is definitely good for the seller! Such planting material is stored longer, and the sales period increases significantly. From the buyer wax, often also tinted green or blue, masks many of the seedling's shortcomings. The likelihood of buying not just dried ones increases, but... even dead plants. Therefore, before buying, no matter how much the seller objects, be sure to make sure that they haven’t slipped you a “pig in a poke” and that the plant’s shoots are alive. After all, you will now have to store it for quite a long time. Wax prevents moisture from evaporating from plants and by the time of planting they look much better than those that were stored in regular packaging.

The main thing after purchase until planting is to keep the rose seedlings in a dormant state. The ideal storage location is a dark room at a temperature of 0 to 2 degrees. You can also fill them with slightly damp sand. If you don’t have such a place, you’ll have to be content with the refrigerator and look there more often. Pinch off emerging sprouts so that they do not take away nutrients. But you can do this no more than twice.

Rose seedlings can be planted in a permanent place immediately after the ground thaws. The planting season begins at the end of April and ends in mid-June.

If you were unable to provide the seedlings with cold storage and replenish lost moisture (wet wrapping, spraying, maintaining high air humidity), there is only one way out - planting in a container (container). To begin with, fill the unpacked root system (after making holes) with water for 10-12 hours. After this procedure, the seedlings look noticeably refreshed and can be planted in a previously prepared container.

You can use a plastic bottle as a container. Using a knife, cut off its upper and lower parts, cut the resulting cylinder lengthwise on both sides, but not all the way - leave 1-2 cm. Glue it in the middle and at the top with tape. The container prepared in this way can be easily removed during rose planting time to a permanent place.

It is better to remove wax from plants that you will grow in the room. Should I remove wax from rose seedlings when planting? straight into the ground - it's up to you. If there are not many plants, you can try to carefully remove it with a toothpick or other suitable object.

Signs of a quality rose seedling are shiny, smooth bark; if you lightly tear it off with your fingernail, you will see a green layer of cambium; white sections of roots and shoots.

But at the same time, you risk breaking off the buds that have begun to grow. Nothing bad will happen if the wax remains on the stems. Modern waxes (from reputable manufacturers) contain additional substances that protect shoots from gray rot and other infections. In addition, the procedure of such coating itself disinfects the seedling. Under the influence of the bright spring sun, and even when the plant begins to actively vegetate, it quickly cracks and gradually falls off on its own.

I bought a rose seedling, it is filled with some kind of paraffin, there are sprouts. Tell me what to do next, how to save it until planting? and got the best answer

Answer from Olga Matafonova[guru]
This year I bought roses for the first time, hybrid tea and climbing roses. I'll tell you about the mistakes I made. The hybrid tea was in the refrigerator, away from the freezer, but even there the buds sprouted and turned into small branches. I took the seedling out of the box, soaked the roots in a root former and planted it in a fairly large container so that the roots would not bend (all the roots were old, not a single one was white), and did not remove the wax. I watered my beauty and left it in the room. For some time, about a week, the rose stood alive and cheerful, and then its branches began to wither. I dumped the soil and realized that the soil was too wet. On the roots I found the beginnings of suction roots. I changed the soil, compacted it (the soil was not dry, so I didn’t water it at all), covered it with a bag on top and periodically sprinkled water from a sprayer there. But soon the last branch withered, and worse, the branches of the seedling began to darken. It was still a stable minus outside at night, so I was afraid to even take it into a cold room. Probably in vain. Today, having lost hope of admiring the beauty of the rose bush, I finally decided to plant the rose in open ground (there is no promise of frost for the next ten days). And when I dumped the rose out of the container again, I discovered the first young roots! I understand that there are not many chances, but I hope for some kind of dormant kidney. At night, I covered the rose by placing a plastic bucket upside down.
What did you do wrong? Filled - once. And left it warm - two. I think if I had placed it in an unheated room, insulating it at night, the result would not have been so disastrous.
Yesterday I planted the climbing plant immediately in open ground, seeing that the buds began to emerge.
Kaluga region, at night +2, warming up.
I fully admit that experienced rose growers will find other mistakes, but this is my very first experience.

It’s warm during the day, they stand open, at night I cover them with plastic buckets and wrap them with old jackets on top. They (the branches) don’t look completely dry, so I’m afraid to cut them yet, in case there is still life in them. And the climbing one looks good, she was not subjected to my student experiments, she immediately got into the OG))

Lena, in my opinion, gave the correct link, but don’t remove the wax, it won’t stop the rose from growing, last summer I went through this and the rose bloomed

Can be stored in the refrigerator or planted in a container. BUT... then you will need to transfer it to a permanent place very carefully without disturbing the earthen lump. The wax should not be removed; it will peel off on its own in the sun. From personal experience

Garden centers now sell roses in colorful boxes. Their stems are covered with paraffin, and their roots are wrapped in a bag. Moreover, in appearance it seems that the roots are quite small. I have never bought roses like this, but I really want to. Tell us how to choose seedlings and how they behave when planted. N. Prilutskaya, N. Novgorod

I had the opportunity to buy the roses in question. They arrive in the same form by mail from some planting material suppliers.

As a rule, seedlings of this type are of very high quality, since paraffin does not allow the stems to dry out and protects them from infections. I can say that they are taking root well.

The fact that the root system of seedlings seems small is understandable. For transportation, the roots are washed from the soil and carefully rolled up, sprinkled with peat. After this they are wrapped in a bag. In sealed packaging, the roots do not lose moisture,

and the stems in paraffin do not evaporate it.

How to choose seedlings?

The box contains colorful photographs. But you should not choose only by the color of the flower. You also need to read which group of roses this variety belongs to. Climbing roses grow up to 2-3 m. Hybrid tea and floribunda - from 60 to 120 cm. Miniature - from 15 to 50 cm. Scrubs are bush roses, including both low and very voluminous bushes.

The size of the flower cannot be determined from the picture: the photograph was reduced or enlarged (for miniature roses) to fit the size of the box. Refer to the description again. For example, miniatures have flower sizes from 2.5 to 5 cm, and Sophia Loren roses - up to 12 cm.

Once you have decided on the variety, inspect the seedling. The branches should not be dark, and the root should not be tightly packed in plastic.

At the end of March - beginning of April, the buds are most likely already awake. Choose bushes whose shoots have not yet grown much. The fact is that in stores there is usually not enough light, and without it the sprouts stretch out and become weak. Such plants can also be purchased, but they will require more attention.

How to store before planting?

If you are lucky enough to find roses whose buds have just swelled, try to keep them cool. Place them in the cellar or basement, where the temperature is low (you can also put them in the refrigerator). But watch out for the seedlings! If they start to grow, remove them from storage immediately or the plants will weaken without light.

Plant the rose in the ground. Before planting, soak the roots in water for 1-2 hours. Spread the roots and trim off all the dark ends (1.5-2 cm). To plant, take a deep container so that the roots do not bend. This could be a plastic two-liter bottle, a flower pot or an old bucket. It is advisable that the container has a drain hole. Otherwise, the roots may rot.

Place the rose on the windowsill. Many people place the bucket on the floor and make a mistake. There is little light there, and the sprouts stretch out. If possible, lower the temperature to control growth.

Water the plants sparingly. Feed once every two weeks with a solution of liquid fertilizer.

With the onset of warm weather, take the roses out onto the balcony or loggia. Make sure that the sprouts are not sunburned or exposed to frost when the temperature drops in the evening. This way you will prepare the plants for moving into the garden and harden them off.

Plant in the ground in May, when the threat of frost has passed. In general, roses can tolerate light frosts, but the plants from the store are weakened

transportation. They need time to adapt.

There is no need to remove paraffin from the stems. It does not interfere with the germination of the buds, and later it will disappear during plant growth.

You can find this article in the newspaper "Magic Bed" 2011 No. 6.

If you have your own house with a vegetable garden, then it would be a huge “sin” if you do not place the queen of flowers in your garden. In this article you will learn how to properly plant a rose bought in a store in a container or treated with wax with photos and videos. You will also learn how to choose planting material and how to store it if there is still a lot of time before planting.

Today there are a huge number of varieties of this amazing flower. You can choose a rose with white, pink, blue and even black flowers. Roses can be grown as a separate bush, or you can create a hedge of beautiful flowers.

So how can you not get confused in such an assortment and choose exactly what you need?

Flower shops can offer you two types of roses:

  • With bare roots
  • And in a container.

We buy seedlings with exposed root systems

Buying roses with an open root system has its advantages, for example, you can inspect the plant completely and choose a healthy bush. And the cost of such seedlings is an order of magnitude lower.

It is better to buy such roses if you intend to plant the plant immediately. When purchasing a seedling in a store with an open root system, give preference to annual ones. Also make sure that the plant has at least 2 woody shoots the size of a pen or pencil.

Try to bend the shoot and if, when bent, it first crunches and then breaks, then this is a good sign. But if you buy a seedling with immature shoots, then your plant may not survive the winter.

If you choose a climbing rose, then when purchasing, the length of the shoots should not be less than 70 cm. Also, such a seedling should not have any flowers, much less fruits.

Also pay attention to the root system. The roots should be strong, healthy, and well branched. If the roots are damaged or dry, discard this specimen.

Unfortunately, when purchasing such a seedling, you will not be able to carefully examine the root system. Therefore, pay special attention to the condition of the bush.

What you should pay attention to when purchasing a rose seedling with an open root system in a store:

Examine the shoots carefully. If the shoots are elongated and have a light green color, then they were stored incorrectly, in warm conditions. Perhaps the seedling did not have enough light, and therefore it will be very difficult for such a specimen to endure replanting and will suffer from pain.

You should pay attention to the vaccination site. Callus tissue should form in this place, which contributes to the normal development of the grafted cuttings. If in this place the bark delaminates and peels off, then it is better to refuse the purchase. Such a rose will not live with you for long.

And of course, don’t forget to inspect your specimen for any pests or diseases. As you understand, a healthy rose should not have any suspicious spots, plaque, midges, etc.

So, you bought a seedling in the store, now let's decide on the planting location. When choosing a location, adhere to the following recommendations:

  • The place must be sunny in the morning.

If you choose a shady place for planting, your rose will stretch out and stop blooming. In the shade, the wood does not have time to ripen and such a rose is susceptible to various diseases (for example, powdery mildew).

  • Choose a quiet place without drafts or wind.

You can plant a rose near a house or a fence, but do not forget that the place should be bright.

  • The terrain should be flat or slightly elevated, but in no case low. Low areas often trap cold air and accumulate water.
  • Since roses are sensitive to stagnant water, make sure that there is good drainage for rainwater at the planting site.
  • Also try to choose a place where roses have not grown before. In such an area, the soil is already depleted and contains few nutrients. In addition, pathogens of various rose diseases can survive in this place.

What should the earth be like?

Roses prefer loose and fertile soil with a slightly acidic reaction. The soil must have good water and air permeability. Unfortunately, finding the perfect place to plant roses is almost impossible, but you can prepare it yourself.

If the soil on your site is sandy, then during digging, add a little loamy soil and humus. Place 2 buckets of well-mixed humus and clay at the bottom of the planting hole.

If the soil, on the contrary, is heavy, then sand mixed with humus is added to such soil in equal parts.

When to plant a store-bought rose

Favorable times for planting roses are spring and autumn. In central Russia (and the Moscow region), roses are planted in March before the buds open. When planting in spring, it is better to buy seedlings in the fall and store them in a dark, cool place until spring, placing them in a box with damp sand or sawdust.

In warmer areas, rose seedlings can be planted in both spring and fall. In such an area, roses are planted in September and after about 2-3 weeks they form roots, which continue to form in winter.

Seedlings purchased in containers can be planted at any time (except winter).

Preparing rose seedlings for planting

Before you start planting seedlings, they must be prepared.

  • What to do if the roots of a rose have dried out.

If stored incorrectly, this can happen. But do not despair, as you can try to save the plant. Seedlings with a dried root system are buried in sand or soil, watered abundantly and left there for a day.

You can place such plants in cold water for a day. The same is done with plants whose stems have wrinkled.

  • What to do if the roots are frozen

Such seedlings are packaged and placed in a cool basement for 6 days. After this time, the seedlings are buried in the ground for 2 days.

  • What to do if boarding time needs to be delayed

If for some reason you cannot plant rose seedlings immediately, then place them in a cool room. If you cannot plant the plant in more than 10 days, then they need to be buried in the ground.

Before planting rose seedlings, pruning of both above-ground and underground shoots is also carried out. We cut off all thin shoots from the above-ground part, and remove dead and damaged shoots. The seedling should have 2-3 strong shoots with well-developed buds. If there are leaves or flowers on the shoots, then they also need to be removed, although it is not recommended to buy such seedlings in a store.

Diseased and damaged roots are also removed. Roots that are too long are shortened to 20-30 cm.

  • What to do with seedlings that are stored in winter

If you bought rose seedlings in the store in advance and are going to store them in the basement, then all the roots of such roses are cut off and placed in damp sand. Over the winter, wound tissue forms at the cut sites, from which new roots form in the spring.

  • What to do with rose seedlings before planting

Before planting, the entire root system is immersed in water for 10 hours (to the grafting site). If planting is carried out in the fall, then the roots are soaked for 2 hours. It is important that the roots are not dry during planting.

Also, before planting, the roots can be soaked in a mash of manure and clay, which is prepared from 1 part clay and 1/2 part manure. This procedure will provide the root system with nutrition for the first time, until the seedling takes root.

Since roses love fertile soils, the soil must be prepared for planting and enriched with nutrients. If you plant a rose in poor soil, it will grow poorly and there will be no flowers.

The soil needs to be prepared for planting earlier in the fall (for spring planting), or 2-3 months before planting.

Dig a hole to a depth of 30-60 cm and mix organic fertilizers, peat, humus and mineral fertilizers with the soil and pour them back into the hole. The dug up soil must be given time to settle, and this will take at least 2 months.

When planting seedlings in the ground, make sure that the ground is not frozen or excessively wet.

If the soil is too damp, then you can put a little coarse sand at the bottom.

In the middle of the prepared hole, make a hole for planting a rose. The seedling is embedded in the ground so that the grafting site is 2-5 cm below the soil level. If the grafting site is higher, then a lot of wild growth will form on the plant and over time you will get wild thickets instead of an ornamental beauty.

The more fertile and lighter the soil, the deeper the grafting site is placed.
