Indoor lily with wide leaves. Perennial bulbous plant Amazon lily (Eucharis): home care, photos, replanting and propagation. Placement and lighting

A magnificent indoor plant with wide, shiny, succulent, dark green leaves and a snow-white bouquet of flowers exuding a subtle, delicate aroma. This is eucharis. This beautiful representative of the bulbous family has another romantic name - Amazonian lily.

Proper care of green pets makes it possible to give your home unique comfort, freshness and beauty. Let's consider what this plant needs for a full life in indoor conditions.

Rules for keeping indoor flowers at home

The requirements for caring for eucharis are dictated by its origin. The habitat in the wild is the floodplain lands of the Amazon and the warm, humid foothills of Colombia. Therefore, when keeping a flower in an apartment we must strive to create conditions similar to the equatorial climate.

Temperature

During the period of active growth and flowering, which often coincides with spring and summer in our climate zone, the Amazon lily loves high temperatures up to 25-30 degrees.

In autumn and winter the plant needs rest. Comfortable thermal conditions – not lower than +18 degrees. Does not tolerate drafts and cold air at all from windows open for ventilation.

The plant is very light-loving. The best place to place it in an apartment is opposite the east window.

If the gardener is forced to keep the eucharis on the south side, then it is better to place the pot on a stand at the back of the room.

Direct sunlight causes burns on the leaves. in the form of white and yellow spots that disfigure the pet.

The soil

The floodplain lands in the homeland of the Amazon lily are very fertile. In indoor conditions, it also requires a nutritious, organic-rich substrate. Ready-made soil mixtures are suitable for flowering plants. Read more about how to prepare soil with your own hands.

Choosing a pot

The choice of pot depends on the size of the planting material:

For a single plant, it is necessary to select a container that will accommodate a sufficient layer of drainage and a volume of soil that completely covers the bulb.

For handling a coma consisting of several plants, a wide and roomy pot is suitable. This is due to the fact that the green mass grows quickly, and an insufficiently massive plant pot will topple.

Watering

IMPORTANT! The most common cause of death of eucharius is rotting of the bulb due to waterlogging.

The frequency and amount of watering depends on what life cycle the plant is in.

Three growth cycles are observed throughout the calendar year. They fall in late autumn, early spring and midsummer. At this time, new leaves are actively appearing, and the need for water increases.

Flowering completes this important period, after which the need for moisture is sharply reduced.

Eucharis is watered with soft, settled water. as the soil dries to a depth of 3 cm. Spraying the leaves before the flowers bloom also brings good results.

During the flowering period, the plant responds well to any organic fertilizer. It is useful to carefully replace the top layer of depleted soil with vermicompost purchased from a specialty store. Garden compost cannot be used for these purposes. It can carry pests and pathogens.

Also at the moment of flower stalks appearance, any fertilizer intended for flowering plants is suitable. Targeted professional fertilizers contain the necessary doses of phosphorus, potassium and are characterized by a reduced nitrogen content. An excess of this mineral element leads to increased leaf growth and lack of flowering.

The Amazon lily is fertilized only during the flowering period, no more than twice a month.

How to care in winter?

In plants living in different conditions, the number of dormant periods and the time of their onset may vary.

The plant itself tells you when it’s time to rest. After the appearance of new leaves and the end of flowering, eucharis seems to freeze for two to three months.

IMPORTANT! At this time, the application of fertilizers is strictly prohibited. Water the flower moderately, only when the earthen ball dries out to two-thirds of the pot's capacity, while preventing the leaves from withering.

Failure to comply with these conditions leads to the fact that the Amazon lily stops blooming.

The end of the dormant period is signaled by the growth of young offspring.

What to do after flowering?

After flowering has ended, some leaves turn yellow and lose their decorative effect. Do not remove them from the pot. Nutrients from wilting leaves enter the bulb and help the birth and development of children.

The wilting of flower stalks indicates the onset of the dormant phase. Watering is reduced and fertilizers are not used. Care after flowering is discussed in more detail at.

How to plant an Amazon lily?

  1. Choose a suitable size flower pot with holes for draining water.
  2. Make good drainage: pour 2 cm of expanded clay or pebbles, lay a layer of sphagnum moss on top.
  3. Prepare the soil by mixing equal quantities of leaf soil, washed river sand, black peat, and vermicompost. It’s good to add a handful of horn shavings and a tablespoon of superphosphate to a bucket of earthen mixture.
  4. Pour a small amount of substrate into the pot, place the bulb in it, carefully straightening the roots. If several plants are intended for planting, then place the bulbs as close to each other as possible. Their bottoms should be located in the same plane.
  5. Cover the bulb with soil up to the beginning of the leaf petiole.
  6. If the soil is dry, moisten it moderately. If there is sufficient humidity, do not water the flower until the leaves begin to grow.

ATTENTION! It is necessary to handle the leaves carefully when planting eucharis. Their loss can lead to the death of the bulb.

The Amazon lily requires replanting only when the pot is ready to burst from the number of overgrown bulbs. The closer the children get, the more profusely it blooms. this is a plant.

Transplantation into a new container is carried out using the transshipment method:

Diseases and pests

The main mistake in caring for Amazon lilies is overwatering. It creates conditions for the development of the scourge of the amaryllis family - root rot. This is a fungal disease that can be successfully treated with foundationazol preparations.

Insect pests rarely attack Eucharis. However, on the plant or in the soil thrips, spider mites or mealybugs may appear. Treatment with acaricidal drugs can solve this problem, but if you want to properly deal with diseases and pests of the Amazon lily, we recommend reading this material.

Eucharis is a beautiful, grateful plant. Easy care, spectacular leaves and wonderful flowers make it a real home decoration.

Eucharis flower. Photo

Eucharis is a bulbous flowering plant from the Amaryllis family. It occupies a worthy place among decorative foliage plants. The fragrant flowers of the Amazon lily, similar to large daffodils, can appear several times a year. Long (up to 50 cm) and wide (about 20 cm) leaves have a slightly corrugated surface.

The flower grows at an average speed and can reach 60 cm. With good care, the bulbs live for many years. Under natural conditions, the plant is distributed in the tropical rainforests of Bolivia, Peru, and the western part of the Amazon (which is why the flower is popularly called the Amazon lily). The mountain slopes of Colombia are considered the birthplace of Eucharis.

Beneficial features

The flower is insidious. Behind the spectacular appearance lies the toxicity of the plant. All parts contain a toxic substance - lycorine, even a small dose of which can cause severe vomiting and dizziness.

Pharmacologists extract this alkaloid from plants and use it to produce bronchodilators that thin and remove mucus. Lycorine also relieves pain and inflammation, eliminates fever and even inhibits the growth of cancer cells. According to legends, the flower gives spouses peace and harmony.

Features of growing at home. Briefly

Eucharis develops well at home if optimal conditions are created for it:

TemperatureUp to + 28°C, in winter – at least + 13°C.
Air humidityAbove average; placed on a tray with wet expanded clay.
LightingDiffused bright; windows facing east and west.
WateringIn summer, abundantly, every 5 days; in winter it is scanty, once every 10 days.
PrimingFor 2 doses of leaf soil - one dose each of turf soil, peat and perlite.
Feeding and fertilizerLiquid mineral fertilizer diluted with water; every 15 days during the flowering period.
Eucharis transplantAdult bulbs, every 3.5 years.
ReproductionFresh seeds, dividing the bulbs.
Features of cultivationKnowing them, the plant is provided with conditions for a good growing season. In spring, bulbs can be planted in the garden: fresh air is good for the flower. After flowering has finished, the bulbs must be dug up and moved into the house. The plant definitely needs to rest after bright flowering for 40 - 45 days.

Eucharis: care at home. Details

A striking plant serves as a bright accent in the interior. At home, Eucharis has no equal among large, beautiful flowers. In order for it to decorate the house with its lush umbrellas, a favorable atmosphere is created around the plant.

Bloom

The culmination of plant development is flowering. The flowering of Eucharis impresses with its enchanting beauty and delicate aroma. On one adult bulb a tall peduncle, up to 0.8 m, appears (if the bulb is powerful, there may be more of them). An inflorescence is formed on it in the form of a snow-white umbrella, consisting of 2 large or 3 – 8 medium flowers, crowned with a golden-white “crown”.

Flowers of different species, despite their general external resemblance to narcissus and constant whiteness, differ from each other.

Their petals are different:

  • texture and size;
  • shape (elongated, ovoid);
  • density;
  • the shape of the tip (it can be pointed or rounded);
  • color of the “crown” (lemon, golden-white, greenish).

Depending on the type of plant, flowering times vary. In comfortable conditions, the Amazon lily can bloom up to three times a year.

Temperature

Maintaining temperature conditions is one of the main principles of growing a tropical plant at home. A heat-loving flower, it is comfortable in summer when the thermometer does not rise above + 27 -28°C, and in winter - at a temperature of at least + 12-13°C. Higher or lower temperatures have a bad effect on the plant: development slows down, and time must pass for it to return to normal.

Temperature changes and drafts have a detrimental effect on the flower.

Spraying

The most important thing is that when caring for eucharis at home, you should not allow the air to become dry. The plant needs high (from 55%) humidity. A flowerpot with a flower is placed on a tray with wet expanded clay, and air humidifiers are used.

You can carefully spray the leaves and wipe them with a damp cloth, but spraying the flowers is unacceptable: water can cause them to rot.

Lighting

Under natural conditions, the flower grows in the shade of taller plants. Therefore, for indoor eucharis, which prefers to be in conditions of bright, diffused lighting, a small shade is preferable to constant bright light.

It is best to place a container with a flower on a window in a western or eastern direction. On the southern window you will need to shade the plant on a hot afternoon, and on the northern window you will need to turn on the phytolamps.

Watering

The plant is moisture-loving. But it should be watered only when the substrate in the flowerpot is about 1/3 dry. Overwatering causes the bulbs to rot and the flower to die. Bottom watering of eucharis is preferable, in which water is poured into a tray (excess water is drained after two days).

Use settled lukewarm water. After watering, the tree trunk circle is mulched with crushed bark or coconut substrate.

Pot

A pot for eucharis that is too spacious will inhibit its flowering. The plant will bloom only when its roots completely cover the area of the container. Eucharis looks more impressive when a group of bulbs is planted in one pot. Each of them requires up to 12 cm of the total volume of the pot.

This is taken into account when choosing the size of the container: it should be wide, but not very deep (when choosing the height of the pot, take into account the height of not only the bulbs, but also the drainage layer).

Priming

You need a breathable nutrient soil, the preparation of which you can do at home yourself. To do this, mix one portion of peat, turf soil, perlite with two portions of leaf soil. You can buy a universal flower substrate in the store.

Coal powder, brick chips and vermiculite are added to any soil mixture. These components will improve the composition of the mixture and make it looser.

Feeding and fertilizer

In order for flowering to be remembered for a long time, fertilizers and fertilizing are needed. During flowering, once every 15 days, use liquid mineral fertilizer, diluted by half with water.

Sometimes it is advised to alternate mineral products with organic products. But it’s inconvenient to do this at home, and organic fertilizers have a bad effect on young bulbs. Eucharis is fed after evening watering, then the plant is shaded for two days. After flowering is completed, they stop feeding.

Transfer

The flower reacts poorly to touching the bulbs and changing location. Therefore, frequent transplantation of eucharis is not necessary. The plant is transplanted in early spring 3.5 years after the last transplant. By this time, new grown bulbs will form in the pot, and the roots will engulf the entire earthen ball.

The plant is removed from the pot, and the roots are carefully freed from the remaining soil. Small bulbs - children can be left on the roots, or they can be planted separately (but by separating them from the mother plant, there is no need to wait for rapid growth and flowering). Drainage is poured at the bottom of the flowerpot, and substrate is poured on top.

The bulbs are buried 50 mm. If there are no leaves, the bulb is not completely covered with soil; the growing point is left at the top. The bulbs are planted 45 mm apart from each other, placing 5 - 7 pieces in one flowerpot at once. After planting, the plant is shaded.

Trimming

After flowering is completed, dried flower stalks must be pruned to facilitate the plant’s transition to the dormant stage and to give the flower a well-groomed appearance.

Rest period

The rest period is very weak. The plant, which has completed flowering, is moved to a cool, dry place for about a month and a half. Water sparingly when the substrate dries out. The lighting intensity does not change. Stop feeding. When new shoots begin to appear, normal watering is resumed.

Eucharis in winter

In winter, eucharis can bloom if the dormant time is moved to the beginning of autumn. If this happens, water the plant as usual, do not shade it and continue to feed it. If the plant does not bloom in winter, it is moved to a cool place, watered rarely and sparingly, and not fed.

Reproduction

Eucharis is a bulbous plant, so 2 propagation options are possible.

Growing Eucharis from Seeds

At home they rarely engage in such propagation: the seeds germinate poorly and the seedlings develop slowly. This option is suitable for breeders who are accustomed to painstaking work and are not afraid of difficulties. The seeds are germinated in a moistened substrate, placed in a greenhouse.

Eucharis propagation by dividing bulbs

Traditional method used at home. In the spring, medium-sized bulbs are separated from the mother plant and up to 7 pieces are planted in a separate flowerpot, located at a short distance from each other: this way the future bush will bloom faster. After planting the bulbs, make sure that they germinate in moist soil, but do not over-moisten the soil.

Diseases and pests

If you carelessly care for the plant, problems with its development may arise: diseases will appear, and pests will begin to attack the diseased flower. Problems manifest themselves as symptoms:

The plant is rarely affected by pests, but sometimes it is harmed by scale insects, spider mites, and thrips.

Types of Eucharis domestica with photos and names

Ten species are common in indoor culture. The most popular include:

Dense leaf blades with long petioles have a bright green color. Their width reaches 150 mm. Up to 3 large, less often up to 6 small, white flowers with a lemon “crown” are formed on the peduncle. Blooms in early spring.

The most popular type. Each bulb produces up to 4 leaves on long petioles. The leaves are slightly corrugated, with prominent veins. Painted in a rich emerald color. A large umbrella of 3–7 large flowers is formed on a high peduncle. It usually blooms in autumn, but sometimes blooms several times a year.

The leaf plates are wide (up to 150 mm) and long (up to 250 mm). They have petioles of medium length. 2 large umbrella inflorescences are immediately formed on the peduncle. Blooms at the very beginning of spring.

The length of the wide ovate leaves reaches 0.4 m. The leaves are colored emerald. The peduncle is green with a brown tint. It has an umbrella of 8 white flowers with a lemon-white “crown”. Blooms in early March.

The leaf blades have a triangular-elongated shape. The length of the leaf can reach 0.23 m, the width is about 0.1 m. An umbrella of 6 snow-white flowers of medium size is formed on a long peduncle.

Eucharis was brought to Europe 200 years ago, but still the “most beautiful” flower (as its name is translated from Latin) is considered the pride and decoration of any floristic collection.

Eucharis is a flowering bulbous plant from the Amaryllis family. It is found in Central and Latin America. The largest number of species live in the Eastern Andes, in the western part of the Amazon, which is why Eucharis is sometimes called the “Amazon lily”. In colder regions, the plant is grown as an indoor flower. Delicate and stylish eucharis blooms large snow-white flowers, and during the dormant period it pleases with “varnished” foliage, therefore it is very popular among gardeners.

Appearance

Eucharis is a perennial, evergreen plant. Its grassy shoots, 40-60 cm high, form spreading thickets. The rhizome is represented by a large round or oblong bulb with a diameter of about 4-6 cm. Oval dark green foliage with a shiny surface grows in the form of a rosette from the ground itself. The leaves have long, erect petioles. In total, 2-7 leaves grow from one bulb, no more than 55 cm long and up to 20 cm wide. Parallel relief veins are clearly visible on the slightly wrinkled surface.

Eucharis blooms most often in February-April. A fleshy tubular peduncle up to 80 cm long grows from the center of the bulb. Its top is decorated with an umbrella inflorescence consisting of 3-10 buds. Flowers bloom one by one. Each has a long, narrow tube with oval, wide-open petals. Their edges are pointed. Six petals are arranged in 2 tiers. In the center there is a fused crown with stamen filaments growing to it. Each flower lives up to 10 days. Its petals are painted white, and the crown with stamens may acquire a greenish or yellow tint.

After pollination, the fruits ripen - fleshy three-chambered seed pods with small elongated seeds. Under favorable conditions, flowering repeats 1-2 more times throughout the year.

Types of Eucharis

Scientists identify about 20 plant species in the genus Eucharis. Three of them are especially popular.

The most popular plant among gardeners produces bulbs with a diameter of 3-6 cm. The oblong leaves with long petioles are dark green. An umbrella inflorescence of 3-6 snow-white flowers with a diameter of about 12 cm blooms on a fleshy peduncle 60-80 cm long. The flowers emit an intense, pleasant aroma. Their white petals surround a greenish-white crown with prominent brown anthers. Flowering can occur in late spring, summer and early winter.

A plant with an ovoid bulb up to 5 cm in diameter grows broadly oval, petiolate leaves 40 cm long and no more than 15 cm wide. The leaf plate is narrowed at the petiole and at the end. The brownish-greenish peduncle ends with an umbrella of 6-10 snow-white fragrant flowers that bloom in March. The pointed petals are wide open and surround a creamy white crown.

A rather large spreading plant is nourished by oblong bulbs with a diameter of about 7 cm. Oval dark green leaves are almost 30 cm long with a width of up to 18 cm. The length of the petiole itself reaches 15 cm. 2-3 large flowers or up to 6 smaller ones bloom on an erect peduncle buds. Snow-white petals surround a yellowish crown. The variety blooms in February.

Reproduction methods

Eucharis can be propagated by seeds or by separating offspring. Since the Amazon lily produces many children, gardeners rarely resort to growing the plant from seeds. For this, fresh ripened seeds are used, which are sown in sandy-peaty soil immediately after collection. The container is covered with film and placed in a room with diffused light and room temperature. With lower heating, seedlings appear faster. It is necessary to regularly ventilate and spray the soil. After seed germination, seedlings are gradually accustomed to growing without shelter. It is better to water the plants more often, but in small portions. The soil should have time to dry by a third. When young eucharis grow 3-4 true leaves, they are transplanted with great care into separate pots of 2-3 plants. Flowering is expected in 4-5 years.

When transplanting eucharis in the spring, several smaller children can be found near the mother bulb. They are carefully separated from each other, trying not to damage the thin roots, and planted in separate pots with a sand-peat mixture. After the bulbs germinate, they are transplanted into soil for adult plants. Watering should be very moderate and lighting should be diffused. Flowering of children occurs after 2-3 years, but large specimens can bloom in the same year.

Features of planting and care

Eucharis, although it belongs to exotic plants, is quite unpretentious at home.

Transfer. Young flowers need annual soil renewal, and larger plants can exist in one pot for up to three years (only the top layer of soil can be replaced). All manipulations are carried out in March, after the end of the rest period. The pot should be small, because flowering occurs more often in a cramped container. Up to 10 plants can be planted in one pot with a diameter of about 30 cm. When planting, the top of the bulb should be visible on the surface of the soil. Soil for eucharis consists of the following components:

  • turf soil;
  • compost;
  • coarse sand;
  • leaf soil.

Drainage material must be poured onto the bottom of the container. After planting, the soil is lightly compacted and watered moderately.

Lighting. Eucharis needs bright, diffused light at least 3-4 hours a day. It can be placed on the windowsill of a western or eastern window. In summer, plants are shaded from the midday sun.

Temperature. In summer, during active growth, the optimal air temperature is +20...+25°C. In November-January it must be lowered to +13…+15°C. Then comes the period during which flower stalks form, so the temperature must be maintained at +18...+20°C. The plant can be grown in cool areas as it does not respond well to heat. At the same time, it is carefully protected from drafts and sudden temperature changes. It is not advisable to take the flower outside.

Humidity. Eucharis develops normally at normal air humidity, but responds gratefully to periodic spraying and bathing. During the flowering period, water treatments are limited. When moisture gets on the flowers, spotting develops.

Watering. For eucharis, it is important to maintain intervals between waterings so that the top layer of soil has time to dry out. Most often, irrigation is carried out during the flowering period (up to two times a week). The rest of the time, the plant is watered less frequently, but the earthen clod is not allowed to dry out completely.

Fertilizer. Eucharis needs feeding only during the flowering and growing season. They use special mineral compositions for flowering plants. They are diluted in water and poured into the soil away from the shoots. After the flowers wither, fertilizer is not applied.

Trimming. The advantage of eucharis over other amaryllis is that it retains its decorative effect even after flowering. Its bright leaves in lush rosettes glisten in the sun and do not fall off during the dormant period. After the last flower has withered, the peduncles are cut off. It is possible for 1-2 leaves to dry out, but no more.

Possible difficulties

Bulbous plants are prone to fungal diseases, especially when the soil is damp and overly moist. Eucharis periodically suffers from gray rot and spotting. In this case, it is necessary to cut off all affected areas and treat with a fungicide (Champion, Topaz, copper sulfate).

If you had to deal with such a problem as yellowing leaves of eucharis, this indicates a disease of the plant. This happens when there is a sudden change in conditions of detention. The bulb suffers and the nutrition of the flower is disrupted. Possible causes include: too dry soil or a sharp increase in watering, exposure to drafts or rapid changes in temperature. By providing the plant with favorable conditions and protecting it from any changes, you can return to its previous appearance.

If eucharis does not bloom, it is important to create a proper dormant period for it. To do this, move the flower to a cool, darker room, reduce watering and stop applying fertilizer. After 4-5 weeks, the flower is returned to its usual conditions. Such shaking often results in the formation of a large number of flowers.

Signs and superstitions

Eucharis is a noble plant, beneficial for the home. It spreads beneficial energy, and during the flowering period it adds vigor and spiritual comfort to household members. The plant takes on negative emotions. It stimulates children's thirst for knowledge, broadening their horizons and demonstrating new abilities. The flower is truly a symbol of the keeper of the hearth. It is not for nothing that in Colombia it is woven into the bride’s wreath to protect the girl and future family from envy and discord.

Content

The Eucharis plant is known as the Amazon lily or narcissus (a common name due to its external similarity). The flower is grown at home or industrially. The homeland of Eucharis is the Colombian region, the territory of the coastal Amazon. It is believed that the plant has a beneficial effect on the comfort and coziness of the home, absorbing negative energy, while it is poisonous for human consumption. Flower buds bloom up to three times a year, creating beauty and comfort for the room.

Description of Eucharis

Amazonian lily eucharis is a flower, a plant of the bulbous genus of the Amaryllidaceae family. From the Latin word "Eucharis" means "graceful". The plant's bulbs are spherical in shape, reaching 6 cm in diameter. Eucharis leaves are wide, dark green, lanceolate, wrinkled (about 2-7 pieces each). They are located on thick, long petioles. Fragrant, fragrant white eucharis flowers, collected in 3-10 pieces. in umbrella-shaped inflorescences, appear in August and September. The fruit of the indoor lily is a three-chambered capsule.

Plant species

There are 20 species of Eucharis lily in the wild, differing slightly from each other. All varieties are wild and not artificially bred. Several types are suitable for indoor purchase:

  • Large-flowered (Eucharis grandiflora). The inflorescence consists of three to six buds, with a diameter of up to 12 centimeters in width, which are located on peduncles 80 cm long. The 20 centimeter leaves of eucharis are glossy. The flower bulb is round, its diameter is 4-6 cm. Eucharis grandiflora blooms in summer, less often in winter.
  • White (Eucharis candida). It differs from other varieties in its bud color (from six to ten pieces bloom at the same time), which have glossy petals. The leaves of white Eucharis grow up to 40 centimeters, and the total size of the bush is 60-70 cm. The bulb of this variety is elongated, ovoid.
  • Amazonian. The lily variety is similar to Large-flowered, but the diameter of the flower varies up to 13 centimeters, and the bush can reach 1.5 meters in height. The leaves of this species grow up to 50-60 centimeters, the bulb – 7-8 centimeters. The plant is large, so it is used for growing in greenhouses.
  • Eucharis mastersii. The leaves of the flower are broadly oval, located on short petioles, reaching up to 25 centimeters in length and 15 in width. There are two umbrellas on the peduncle.
  • Eucharis sanderi. Lily is grown for industrial purposes. The leaves of the plant are large (30/17 centimeters), broadly oval. The peduncle is round, there are 2-3 white flowers on the umbrella (less often 4-5 small multi-flowered ones). The bulb is ovoid. Lilies bloom from February to April.
  • Eucharis subedentata. Lily leaves are oblong, triangular, growing up to 23 centimeters in length and 11 in width. The narrow peduncle has umbels with 6-8 white flowers. The plant bulb has an oval shape.

When does Eucharis bloom?

With proper handling of the Amazon lily, the indoor Eucharis flower blooms two to three times a year. From October to November, 5-8 (rarely more) peduncles appear, at the beginning of summer there are 2-3 of them. A third wave could occur on New Year's Eve. The plant does not bloom at this time for several reasons, including illness, improper transplantation, hypothermia, temperature changes in the room, etc.

Caring for Eucharis at home

The Eucharis plant is not difficult to grow at home, you just need to bring it closer to its usual conditions. The habitat of the Amazon lily is the tropics (Central and South America from Guatemala to Bolivia). The main thing for a plant is space: the flower does not like being cramped. For high-quality cultivation, you also need to pay attention to lighting, temperature conditions, the degree of humidity in the room, methods of transplantation, watering and fertilizing.

Air temperature and humidity

The natural environment of Eucharis is the tropics, so the plant loves warmth and moderate humidity. Room temperature should vary from 23 to 30 degrees, and not be lower than 15. The latter can lead to rotting of the root bulb. The plant does not like drafts and sudden changes in temperature, at which it does not bloom or the flowers decrease in size. During flower growth, the plant is sprayed (water temperature should be 24-25 degrees) and kept on a stand with wet pebbles. Stop spraying when flowering occurs.

Watering a flower

The indoor plant should be watered systematically when the soil is 1/4 dry. Drying and waterlogging can lead to the death of the plant, the appearance of brownish spots on the leaves, and rotting of the bulb. Water the flower in the center of the pot, using bottom feeding. For the latter, you need to place a tray under the flower, pour water, remove the container when the indoor lily with wide leaves absorbs the necessary moisture. After the flowering process, watering is halved and done when the soil is half dry. The water should be rain or melt water, at room temperature.

Lighting Features

Under normal conditions, the flower grows under the canopy of trees, so it loves light (this is how the plant blooms more profusely), but not direct sunlight. At home, the location of the lily depends on the location of the windows. On the south side, you need to protect the plant from sunlight with gauze and light curtains, for example, organza. On northern windows, the flower does not have enough light and has to use lamps. The western and eastern direction of the windows is an ideal place for the plant.

Eucharis transplant

A young plant is replanted annually, a large and mature plant – once every three years. The latter can be used to periodically replace the top layer of soil. Transplantation should be done in early spring (preferred month is March). This is the time when the plant is in a state of rest. The pot should be shallow and wide, slightly larger than the previous one. Before transplanting, you need to make holes in it to allow excess water to escape. Watering after the process is done half as often as before. The soil mixture for replanting should be light and allow moisture and air to pass through.

The recommended method for replanting is transshipment, when the soil is not shaken off from the roots. For further flowering, you should remember about the young shoots of the plant - “babies”, which are formed next to the roots and are transplanted inseparably from the flower. The process is carried out in stages:

  1. Prepare the soil mixture for the flower: mix leaf soil, sand, humus, clay and sand (ratio 4/2/2/1/1) or leaf and peat soil, sand, turf soil (proportions 3/2/1/1), add cow dung.
  2. Moisten the soil.
  3. Pour a drainage layer into the pot - fine expanded clay one-fourth of the container.
  4. Move the Amazon lily flower seedling into the soil so that the root goes 5 centimeters deep.

Plant nutrition

Fertilizing the flower is done once every two weeks during the growth and flowering period of the plant (spring and summer). For feeding, mineral compositions with a low nitrogen concentration are used (Agricol, Fertika-Lux, Bone Forte). The dosage is taken less than half that indicated on the package. Purchased fertilizers are mixed with water and poured into the soil. After the flowers wither, fertilizing is not applied. In winter and autumn, the plant is grown without fertilizers, because after flowering they need rest for 1-1.5 months. For this reason, watering is reduced.

At home, you can prepare a decoction to feed the lily flower. It is made without salt from sea fish, which must be boiled in a small amount of water for an hour and a half. After cooking, the liquid is filtered, cooled and stored in the refrigerator. Fertilizing indoor lilies is carried out once a month. The decoction is poured 50 milliliters per pot of lily flowers.

Reproduction

The Amazon lily reproduces by seeds (flowering will occur in five years) or by shoots - “babies”, which are formed next to the roots of an adult plant. Small tubers are separated every two to three years during transplantation in the spring. The mother bulb is divided into 5 small tubers and placed to a depth of 5 centimeters in a separate wide and deep container, at the bottom of which there is small brick or expanded clay, and a moistened substrate is placed on top. After transplanting in this way, flowering occurs in the second year.

Diseases and pests

Why doesn't Eucharis bloom?

The lack of flowering of a lily indicates an improperly organized dormant period. A “shake” can lead to the appearance of a large number of flowers: the lily is sent to a cool, darker (than usual) room, watering and fertilizers are reduced. After 4-5 weeks, the flower can be returned to its previous conditions. The second reason is the small number of bulbs. When kept alone, flowering will occur in 3-5 years, when the Amazon lily acquires “babies”. This phenomenon can be avoided by proper replanting and caring for the plant.

Refined, delicate, elegant with a charming and subtle aroma, it can attract attention for a long time and at first sight... All this can be said about such an amazing flower as eucharis, which even a not very experienced amateur gardener can care for at home. This plant can grow well not only in apartments, but also in business centers, sanatoriums, and holiday homes, where caring for flowers often comes down to regular watering.

Knowledge of some of the subtleties of the content can help not only grow a strong and healthy plant, but also ensure constant blooms more than once a year.

Eucharis: Description and photo of the flower

Eucharis is also popularly called tropical or Amazonian lily, although it has nothing in common with this plant and belongs to the Amaryllis family. In its natural environment it can be found in Colombia and South America. This flower was brought to Europe only in the 20s of the 19th century.

The plant is bulbous, quite large, the leaves are rich green, dense, spreading, up to half a meter long, approximately 12-15 cm wide. The flowers are always white, collected in an umbrella inflorescence 5-7 pieces on a juicy and tall peduncle. The so-called crown, which is white, is formed from the stamens in the center of the flower. In terms of structure and color, Amazonian lily flowers are similar to daffodils.

Varieties of Eucharis with photos

Eucharis Amazonian lily (Brazilian, as it is also called) is a charming and rather unpretentious flower. Many experienced gardeners often advise people who have no prior experience in caring for indoor flowers to buy it. The flowers of the plant are characterized by a pronounced aroma. The Amazon lily retains its decorative and attractive appearance throughout the year. The leaves are wrinkled, green, and elongated to the touch.

Eucharis grandiflora - characterized by large inflorescences, reaching a size of 15 cm. Flowers are collected in umbrella-shaped inflorescences of up to 10 pieces. The leaves are dark green, juicy, large, and can grow up to 35 cm in length. This plant looks very attractive in a home interior.

Home care for eucharis

Despite the fact that the plant grows from a bulb, caring for the flower is slightly different from the others, primarily in that eucharis does not have a pronounced dormant period; accordingly, special maintenance conditions are required.

Light

Eucharis no bright lighting required, and he feels great in partial shade. This flower can grow at home both on window sills that face north and on windows facing south. If the plant is located indoors on the south side, then it is best not to place it on a window sill; you can install it on a special stand or bedside table near the window. Like any indoor flower, the rays of the sun can simply burn the leaves.

Temperature

Air humidity

Like any tropical plant, the Amazon lily prefers warm and humid air. You can increase the humidity by wiping the leaves with a damp sponge or cloth, a warm shower or periodic spraying from a spray bottle. This will refresh the flower and also remove accumulated dust, making the leaves glossy. When flowering, it is advisable to replace spraying with a wide container of water, which is placed on the windowsill, since even small drops of water on delicate petals can lead to the appearance of brown spots.

Watering

In caring for this plant, proper watering plays an important role for the general condition of eucharis and its decorative properties. Flower does not need a lot of water, and like other bulbous plants, the “golden rule” applies to it - a lack of water is better than an excess. Therefore, during growth, the plant should be watered no more than three times a week, avoiding excessive drying out of the soil, and during “rest” once a week is enough.

The bulb is very sensitive to constant moisture and can rot, especially when the ambient temperature at this time is around +15C.

Choosing a pot and soil composition for eucharis

Eucharis leaves spreading, heavy and large, therefore, caring for this plant at home must begin with choosing a pot for growing it. It is best to choose a ceramic and wide pot; in a light plastic pot, it may fall under the weight of the leaves. There is no need to be afraid that in a wide container the plant will become overgrown with children and will no longer bloom.

The Amazon lily is one of those bulbous flowers, the distinctive feature of which is that the mother plant blooms much longer and more readily when there are children. Therefore, during its transplantation, there is no need to remove the young bulbs, but it is better to plant the plant in a large box, this will ensure flowering for several eucharis at the same time.

Soil composition you need to choose nutritious and loose:

  • 2 parts of turf land;
  • 2 parts leaf soil;
  • 1 part sand;
  • 1 part rotted cow manure;
  • 1 part peat.

This composition is thoroughly mixed, and middle fraction drainage is placed at the bottom of the pot. To give the pot better stability, it is best to choose heavy materials: b molded brick or ceramics, pebbles.

How to fertilize eucharis?

It is necessary to feed this flower only during its active life cycle, selecting mineral universal fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus. For example, such as “Bona Forte” for decorative indoor flowering plants. When large quantities of cow manure or other organic matter were added to the soil during planting, there is no need to use organic fertilizers in the first year. Frequency of adding bait: twice a month.

For planting, you can use bulbs, both with and without young leaves. However, taking this into account, planting and further caring for the plant at home will vary.

Planting a bulb with leaves significantly increases the speed of plant rooting. The bulb must be planted to a depth of approximately 8 cm, compacted thoroughly. For the first days, you need to water carefully and not abundantly; the air temperature needs to be adjusted to +24-28C. Heating from the bottom of the pot will have a positive effect. Why can you use special electrically heated mats? A clear sign that the flower has taken root is the appearance of young leaves.

Without leaves, the bulb must be planted in such a way that one fourth of it is exposed to the surface. This is required so that you can watch the development, since the first leaves have not yet appeared, it is quite vulnerable and susceptible to disease. The air temperature, as in the case described above, must be increased and the pot must be heated.

The bulb can rot from below, so it can be difficult to determine this and often it is already very late. The soil is watered moderately. With proper care of the plant, sprouts should appear in a month; at this time, the amount of watering is increased and mineral fertilizers begin to be added. When leaves form, the bulb can be completely covered with soil.

Eucharis is transplanted after all the inflorescences have withered and no new leaves and flower stalks have appeared. When the plant is just gaining strength and growing rapidly, it is necessary replant every year. Developed mature bushes can be replanted once every 3 years. After replanting, the first week of watering should be moderate, and it is best to move the pot to a dark place, so acclimatization will occur faster.

Plant care after flowering

Then, when the eucharis has faded and all the inflorescences have withered, you need to wait a little until the peduncle dries. During this time, the plant will take away the remaining nutrients from it, and only then can the peduncle be cut off. Eucharis does not “hibernate”, but it needs to organize rest, this is an indispensable part of caring for the plant at home.

At this time, stop adding bait, reduce the abundance and frequency of watering, some gardeners advise reducing the ambient temperature up to +15-16C, however this is not a requirement. For 40-45 days, eucharis will rest without forming new leaves. A signal that the plant is ready to develop further is the appearance of new shoots, and then flower stalks. It is very important not to miss this moment and provide the flower with nutrition in the form of bait and regular watering.

Why doesn't Eucharis bloom?

For many years now, there has been an Amazonian lily on the window, stable care: spraying, feeding, watering, but it still doesn’t want to bloom? Here there are several reasons, and they are associated both with the characteristics of the plant and with the mistakes that were made during maintenance.

To give eucharis a little “shake-up” and stimulate the plant to flower, you can try move it to a cool place with dim lighting and reduce watering as much as possible, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly. It is advisable to do this in the winter so that in the spring the bush begins to grow naturally. After providing bait and increasing watering, the plant must be brought back to its usual conditions.

Why do Eucharis leaves turn yellow and die?

It is no secret that a healthy and strong plant is practically not susceptible to attacks by pests and diseases. If this happens, then this means that in care made some mistake, but, one way or another, identifying the problem in a timely manner is half of solving it.

Eucharis diseases are usually subject to gray rot. These are fungi that develop rapidly in dampness and low temperatures, forming gray spots on the stems and leaves. In very hot and dry air, thrips, aphids and spider mites may appear, which also harm the plant. All such diseases can be fought with traditional methods, but it is better to purchase modern insecticides, they are much more effective.

Proper care and the right approach to eucharis will help organize its flowering all necessary conditions. By carrying out all the procedures required for the flower, which are described above, you will be able to admire the beautiful appearance of its white flowers several times a year.

A large number of signs are also associated with eucharis, but all the associated superstitions indicate that the flower has an extremely beneficial effect on the home and its inhabitants; you can learn more about this by visiting the forum of the owners of this plant.
